when riding a merry-go-round, we are exposed to centrifugal forces that push outward. a frenzy of movement blurs our senses and leaves us dizzy but happy. urban life itself can deliver a similar experience. a seemingly never-ending loop of work to pay enormous rents while juggling social and love life, the metropolis also gifts us distraction, inspiration, and pleasure. the city as a catalyst for a playful rush.
creating two-piece collages of a person and a background, toni meyer plays with the images she captures on her walks through our cities and combines elements that did not belong together before. at first glance, everything seems familiar. upon closer inspection, something feels slightly off: misbehaving perspectives and lines, rough digital cut-outs, clothes matching facades. here, the real and the imagined are blended to dizzying effect, both sharpening and confusing our idea of the city.
toni meyer is based in munich. her work spans photography, video installation and performance and has been exhibited widely, including recent shows at galerie 3ap in düsseldorf, neue kaiser in frankfurt (curated for cartier), spoiler zone in berlin and a series of public performances in munich.
